5. REXX

Rather similar to Perl, only without "all the funny characters," this scripting language was developed by IBM as a replacement for their EXEC command processor. Had IBM and Microsoft stayed friends for longer, this could perhaps have replaced the exceedingly shoddy "Batch" capabilities that grew out of COMMAND.COM. The syntax of REXX is largely based on that of PL/1 .
