New Mexico vendor that installs Linux and BSD OSes
I purchased a machine from them about two years ago that I was quite pleased with; some reports in 1998 suggested cause for concern:
Atipa Computers from New Mexico was purchased by somebody named Jason Tally in Joplin. MO., and everybody from the original company quit. We just had a horrible experience with them. We have been waiting over 4 weeks for a motherboard. They sent ours to somebody else, and that guy's to us. Then, they made us wait for 1 week before they would even acknowledge the problem. After that they made us wait for the other guy to ship his back, and then they reshipped it to us. They say, we are still waiting. All of this, even thought they have the motherboard in stock, and could have replaced it anytime. You might want to think about including them on this list. I think all the technical people left too. | ||

This is hearsay which I can't readily verify; nonetheless, this, combined with another report I received of slow service, suggests that Atipa should be handled with some care.
I have also received email from someone indicating they represented Atipa, which said that they investigated the problems, finding that they resulted from the actions of a "problem employee" who is now no longer with the company, as well as relating to the "disarray" resulting from the change of ownership.
Optimistically, that hopefully means good service ahead; regaining trust after having had such problems obviously takes a bit of time...
Atipa had a full-fledged booth at the Atlanta Linux Showcase (Fall 1999); they are now selling Alpha-based systems, and certainly appeared to be in rather better shape than they were in at the time of the change of ownership. That provides further positive evidence...

This vendor has a lot of useful technical information about various sorts of hardware, including benchmarks and some predictions as to what is soon to become state-of-the-art.

They sell servers based on many-core MIPS CPUs. This can provide substantial CPU horsepower with relatively low CPU speeds, which saves a lot on power consumption.
