HDS - X Terminals/Network Computer
Soon to be renamed "Neosoft," to avoid confusion with Hitachi Data Systems, which also happens to be a significant "business partner"...
If you want to make a 'diskless' workstation truly diskless you can use a BOOT ROM. This is a ROM chip that plugs into your Ethernet adapter and allows you to boot an operating system of choice (controlled by a server) via the network.
If you have many workstations, this method of booting them eliminates the need to install and configure the operating system on each one.
This could allow you to eliminate the hard disk, which reduces the size, complexity, and cost of desktop workstations.
On the other hand, it means that all disk access including the handling of swap space has to be handled over the Ethernet, which means that data-intense applications should not run on such machines.
Available for 3c509 (3com) and NE2000 (generic) cards.
